Court of Central Jurisdiction
The Mille Lacs Band Judicial Branch, the Court of Central Jurisdiction, is comprised of a trial-level District Court and a Court of Appeals. The District Court hears all criminal and civil cases, including child protection, traffic and natural resource violations, small claims, domestic relations, child support, and more.
Decisions of the District Court may be appealed to the Court of Appeals. Three Associ-ate Justices, one appointed from each of the Band’s three Districts, hear the appeals. A Chief Justice is selected by the Associate Justices and is responsible for administering the Court of Central Jurisdiction overall.
The District Court Judges and the Court of Appeals Justices are appointed to six-year terms by the Chief Executive and confirmed by the Band Assembly.
