The Community Health Educator plans, coordinators and provides culturally sensitive health promotion programs, health education programs, conferences, and other associated activities for individual, group, and/or community needs.
• Associates degree in health education, nutrition or related health field required
• Will consider experience commensurate with the ability to be successful in the job role.
• 1-3 years of experience in teaching, health promotion, and/or community education is required.
• Commitment to complete required training to manage health prevention grants, to include however not limited to Tobacco Treatment Specialist (TTS), Must be non-smoker.
• Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification is required or able to obtain within 90-days of employment.
• Experience coaching adults one-on-one and in group settings required.
• Ability to work and effectively communicate sensitive, confidential information with patients, families, public agencies and co-workers.
• Strong written, verbal, analytical, organizational and interpersonal skills.
• Basic computing skills in a Windows environment, including Word, Excel and other software.
• Ability to work independently or in a team setting.
• Ability to document processes, maintain databases, and provide access to resources.
• Ability to collect and analyze data and other information in order to evaluate programs determine the needs of the communities served.
• Demonstrated comfort with public speaking to support leading programs, teaching classes, and facilitating discussion with clients and families.
• Creative thinker to support ways to provide outreach and education on how to improve the health of our Communities.
• Ability to develop written materials to convey health-related information.
• Experience in and sensitivity to Native American culture.
• Must have a current valid driver’s license.
• Must be insurable under the Mille Lacs Band Drivers Insurance policy.
• Must pass a background check.
• Must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test.
• Must be smoke free (Grant requirement).
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Tasks are generally well defined, with limited need for making decisions. Gathering information and analysis is required but established guidelines, practices, and procedures generally define the alternative solutions. Acts within the scope of normal responsibilities and performs under limited direct supervision.
Typical decisions and problems include:
• Determining if a client understands directions, and if not, how to deliver the information in a different manner.
• When to refer a client to another Band service, care giver or outside services.
• Assessing educational content for cultural sensitivity and comprehension.
• Facilitates effective health education programs to meet the needs of Band members.
• Promotes health through written materials, speaking engagements, , outreach and participation in other health related programs and workshops.
• Develops health education material for use by staff, community and individuals based on a needs assessment.
• Provides written and oral reports as required.
• Works with a variety of grants, since this role relates to grant support for the Smoking cessation program, being a non-smoker is required.
• Collaborates, and attends meetings as needed.
• Maintains an up-to-date listing of various community resources and agency health education materials.
• Facilitates health education events, workshops, conferences, and presentations.
• Promotes health education initiatives.
• Evaluates, designs, presents, recommends, and disseminates culturally appropriate health education information and materials.
• Consult with physicians and staff regarding related health education services.
• Evaluates programs; performs research on relevant topics, and develops and/or revises curriculum modules and/or presentation materials as appropriate.
• Presents lectures and training to groups and/or individuals, as appropriate.
• Performs other job related duties as assigned.
• Nature of work is such that incumbent experiences infrequent periods of low to moderate stress while dealing with clients, family members, and others.
• Work is primarily indoors in a climate controlled office or a community setting, with minor work outside.
• Little threat of personal danger or risk.
• Hours are typically 8-5, but possibly with some extra hours, evening or weekend work.
• Some travel is required.
