Drum and Dance/Cultural Assistant (2 Positions)

REPORTS TO: Ojibwe Language Director
SALARY RANGE: DOQ

SUMMARY:
The Drum & Dance/Cultural Assistant is responsible for facilitating drum and dance instruction to Mille Lacs Early Education and NASS students, and assisting both the Cultural Arts Teacher and the Four Seasons Worker in a variety of cultural activities.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Dedicated to retaining the language and cultural ways of Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe.
• Highly knowledgeable in Mille Lacs traditional ways.
• Willingness to obtain training in Ojibwe Language instructional methods.
• Loves children, can whole-heartedly engage in working with and for them.
• Understands the relationship of Nay Ah Shing School Ojibwe Language Program to the Mille Lacs community, values and supports the mission of both.
• Willingness to maintain a high level of competence, exercise discreet judgment and honor confidentiality.
• Project an image of professionalism and maintain a positive attitude.
• Strong organizational and communications skills.
• Must pass a background check.
• Must pass a pre-employment drug & alcohol test.
• Mille Lacs Band Member/American Indian Preference does apply.
• Background investigation required that shows no theft or fraud above a misdemeanor, no felony drug conviction and no sexual or crimes-against-a-person conviction at any level.
• A staff person with direct contact with or access to children in care must disclose the arrest, conviction, and applicant background information if that staff person:
(a) has a conviction of, has admitted to, has an adjudication of delinquency for, has been charged and is awaiting trial for, or a preponderance of the evidence indicates the person has committed:

  1. a crime against a child;
  2. an act of physical or sexual abuse;
  3. neglect;
  4. a felony;
  5. the same or similar crimes as those in this subsection listed in the laws of another state or of the United States or of any Tribal law;
    (b) has a conviction of, has admitted to, has an adjudication of delinquency for, has been charged and is awaiting trial for, or a preponderance of the evidence indicates the person has committed any misdemeanor offense under Federal, State, or Tribal law involving crimes of violence; sexual assault, molestation, exploitation, contact or prostitution; crimes against persons; or offenses committed against children. The Licensing Committee may evaluate the nature and time of a misdemeanor assault charge as well as other types of misdemeanor crimes not specified in this section to determine whether employment is appropriate.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Facilitate drum group and student dance practices on a daily basis
• Supervise drum and dance students on various field trips to schools, events, local powwows.
• Educate students on the process of making a drum, and the responsibility of a drum and/or owning a drum.
• Assist in making cultural crafts such as quilts, dance outfits, and Ojibwe games.
• Assist in seasonal harvesting, pipe and dish, graduation ceremonies, school powwows, awards night and other planned activities.
• Create a healthy safe, welcoming and comfortable learning environment that supports a child’s growth and development.
• Adjust teaching style and classroom set up as needed to benefit all children, including accommodations for students on individualized educational plans.
• Attend Ojibwe Language staff meetings.
• Other duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
• Work hours are 40 hrs/week, 42 weeks.
• Work environment has no or little stress.
• Work environment is both in and outdoors (outdoor activity may include a pow wow &
Harvesting camp).
• There is little threat of exposure to personal danger (ex: operating a sewing
machine or other crafting tools).
• Travel may be required for training purposes/out of state travel is limited.
