Family Service Worker (Early Education)

Position Title: Family Service Worker

The Family Service Worker is responsible for assisting the parents with enrollment, family partnership agreements, program data and filing. Maintain contact with providers and families and work with all other components (health, nutrition, and family services, mental health) to integrate educational/family goals and developmentally appropriate practices. This position is also responsible for the professional and efficient managing of visitors, consumers, telephone calls and messages, as well as a variety of clerical duties that support services for families, information and referral and the operation of Mille Lacs Early Education Program.

• Minimum of an AA Degree required.
• At least one year experience working in family services or parenting education required.
• Experience working with Native American families and children is preferred.
• Loves children can wholeheartedly engage in working with and for them.
• CPR and first aid certified or (within 90days).
• Current mantox (yearly) and physical every two years.
• Continued compliance of the Mille Lacs Band drug and alcohol policy.
• Employment is conditional upon pre-hire and continued compliance of the background check policy.
• Mandated reporter monitor and report suspected child abuse and neglect.
• All communications are potentially sensitive and are subject to head Start confidentiality policy.
• Projects and maintains an image of service and professionalism with a positive attitude and interacts easily as an integral part of the faculty and staff.
• Understanding of the relationship of the Early Education Program to the Mille Lacs Band Community also values and supports the mission of both.
• Sustained concentration and ability to handle multiple tasks often simultaneously.
• Employees of the Mille Lacs Early Education Program are excluded from MLEE governing boards or committees.
• Head Start / Early Head Start experience.
• Head Start / Early Head Start Parent.

• Enrollment of families, including tracking PIR and follow up requirements.
• Collaborate with community organizations to support families in achieving goals.
• Follow Head Start ERSEA requirements.
• Promote a consistent exchange of information.

Family Partnership Building
• Welcome families into the program and share information about transitioning into Head Start.
• Assess family goals and provide recommendation and referral for relevant community resources.
• Develop Family Partnership goals and assist parents in meeting goals with documentation.
• Assist with Kindergarten transition of child and family out of Head Start.
• Maintain minimum monthly contacts i.e.: phone calls, group activities or set visits to promote partnership and provide for regular communication.
• Monitor progress in Family Partnership goals.
• Promote family literacy and school readiness.
• Prepare and distribute follow-up containing pertinent information requested by the family in a timely manner.
• Work flexible hours to meet the needs of the family.
• Ensures knowledge of staff whereabouts and maintains accurate and complete sign-in/sign-out procedures for on-site staff and visitors.
• Promptly, accurately, professionally and courteously receives all telephone calls and visitors.
• Performs routine office tasks necessary for the operation and presentation of a professional office as observed by the supervisor.
• Write daily bus passes for Early Head Start.
• Relay messages to appropriate staff in a timely matter.
• Other duties as assigned.

Parent Involvement & Community Partnerships
• Actively encourage parents to participate in the program i.e.: Parent meetings, field trips, policy council, and classroom help.
• Advocate and collaborate to support child, family, and agency outcomes.
• Work with appropriate agencies in developing specialized planning for children and families as needed.
• Participate in regularly scheduled team meetings to plan for and deliver collaborative services across all components.
• Support and promote Ojibwe culture and language.
• Complete Home-visits as needed.
• Maintain open and regular communication with families.
• Be respectful of the families’ culture and traditions.

Additional Responsibilities
• Assess individual, group and program needs, attending to special needs specific interest, strengths and concerns.
• Document and track follow-up needs, Family Partnership goals, and health, dental, nutrition, hearing and vision concerns.
• Collaborate with community resources to provide information, support, and an individualized service plan.
• Attend required trainings.
• Assure general maintenance and inventory for equipment and supplies.
• Assure that the Head Start Performance Standards are met.
• Maintain supportive documentation as appropriate.

• Typical hours Monday thru Friday 6:00 to 5:30 may require evenings and occasional weekends.
• The stress level is moderate.
• Work is Indoors.
• The risk or personal danger exposure is little.
• Local travel is required.
• Travel outside the state maybe required.
