The Ge-niigaanizijig Youth Mentor is responsible for providing a comprehensive, diversified education program, (tutoring, educational lessons, and classroom (group) instruction) that meets the needs of the youth and community. The Ge-niigaanizijig Youth Mentor is responsible for supervision and coordination of work experience, training, activities and events for youth participants. Provide and encourage the development of good work ethics, sense of community, cultural competency, and teamwork among participants. Develop, coordinate and facilitate after-school and summer programs designed to help youth participants gain the skills and knowledge to prepare them for the challenges they will face as adults.
• High School Diploma or GED, and two (2) years of post-secondary education are required.
• Two to Five (2-5) years of prior experience in youth work, education, child development, or related field is preferred.
• Two to Five (2-5) years’ experience working within tribal communities preferred.
• Should have experience in educational program planning, family & engagement activities, working in collaboration with other area agencies and schools.
• Must be comfortable with communicating with parents and other agencies on a regular basis regarding youth’s progress and activities.
• Must be able to maintain statistical information regarding programs and participation.
• Must be computer literate and operate in applicable computer software.
• Ability to mentor youth participants through positive experiences, trainings and events.
• Must have working knowledge of basic hand tools, light equipment and other materials to complete outdoor job assignments.
• Knowledge of occupational hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with working conditions.
• Strong interpersonal communication skills required.
• Must have current valid driver’s license and be insurable under the Mille Lacs Band Drivers Insurance policy.
• Must be able to pass State and Federal background check with fingerprinting.

• Must pass a Pre-employment drug & alcohol test.
• This positions may be grant funded and is dependent upon the continued funding of the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe’s P.L 102-477 grants program and Net Revenue.
• Background check must be compliant with the Education Department requirements.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Run daily educational programs including, but not limited to, tutoring, computer classes, literacy programs, group collaboration sessions, group instruction.
• Lead classroom-type lessons (activities), lasting up to an hour, of educational enrichment that is tangible/ job specific, as well as age appropriate.
• Upon implementation and fulfillment of program requirements, provide critical analysis of success/shortcomings and how to improve.
• Submit periodic (Daily, Weekly, Monthly) written reports including statistical information.
• Monitor participants’ progress by maintaining continuous communication with each participant by phone, email or face to face appointments.
• Prepare weekly schedule and plan curriculum.
• Submit reports by collecting and summarizing information using case notes, data reports and collaboration meetings.
• Work with participants requesting assistance in education, academic or social issues.
• Monitor and track goal progress
• Assist in developing established goals for participants and ensure the programs offered meet their goals during each year’s activities. Goals may include financial literacy, job-readiness skills, basic communication skills, academic assistance and tutoring.
• Ensure the intake process of clients are accurately documented in the Aanjibimaadizing database.
• Maintain positive working relationship with area schools and teachers.
• Supervise the youth enrolled in the program.
• Communicate effectively with staff, program participants, parents and community partners.
• Attend Tribal District Community Meetings on monthly basis.
• Must be able to drive company owned vehicles.
• Attend regular staff meetings and be responsible for extensive record keeping and documentation as required for the program and grant requirements.
• Complete detailed reports including incident reports and program progress reports.
• Must abide by mandated reporting guidelines.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
• Typical hours are 10:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m., Monday – Friday. Evening and weekend scheduling is expected on an, as needed basis. Hours may need to be flexible.
• There is moderate stress associated with this position.
• Work is primarily indoors, but events and trips may require some outdoor work.
• There is little risk of personal danger or risk.
• Local travel is required; out of state travel may be necessary.
