SUMMARY:
The Paralegal provides assistance to the Office of the Solicitor General in the form of legal research, preparation for hearings, trials, and of legal documents. This assistance is intended to provide support for staff of attorneys.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• An Associate or Bachelor’s degree or Certificate in Paralegal/Legal Studies.
• One to three years’ experience in the field or a related area, a plus; but will train.
• Knowledge of commonly used legal concepts, terminology, and procedures.
• Knowledge of legal principles, civil litigation, legal research and writing; knowledge of tribal law or custom, a plus.
• Ability to interpret and apply laws, and to communicate effectively.
• Strong attention to detail.
• Understanding of and sensitivity to Native American culture.
• Competency in Microsoft Office Suite.
• Capable of being bonded with no criminal history
• Must have a current valid driver’s license.
• Must be insurable under the Mille Lacs Band Drivers Insurance policy.
• Must pass a background check.
• Must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Research and analyze legal sources such as Band statutes, recorded Band judicial decisions, state and federal statutes, treaties, constitutions and uniform codes.
• File and serve pleadings and other legal documents.
• Act as liaison with other government department personnel that the Office of Solicitor General serves, the courts and other agencies.
• Maintain case files in an up-to-date and organized manner.
• Compile information, organize data, and produce various reports.
• Other duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
• Nature of work is such that incumbent experiences frequent periods of moderate stress levels while dealing with related workload issues.
• Work is exclusively indoors in a controlled climate area.
• Little threat of personal danger or risk.
• Hours are typically 8-5, but extra hours may be necessary to meet deadlines and maintain workload. Infrequently may involve some evening or weekend working.
• Local travel is minimal.
