Police Officer Cadet

SUMMARY:
The Police Officer Cadet position is to fulfill a state grant funded program to address the critical shortage of Peace Officers in the state of Minnesota and in Indian Country. The Intensive Comprehensive Peace Officer Education and Training Program (ICPOE) is a (Non-Traditional) hiring of a candidate with no previous law enforcement experience and provides law enforcement (PPOE) certification in order to be licensed in the state of Minnesota as a Peace Officer. The program provides paid Peace Officer certification and a wage while attending the certification program.

The Police Cadet will transfer to an entry level Police Officer position upon completion of training, passing the Peace Officer’s license examination, psychology examination, and physical examination.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Must be a two (2) year or preferred four (4) year college graduate of any discipline from an accredited institution. (hlcommision.org)
• Must have a valid driver’s license.
• Must be a U.S. Citizen.
• Must submit/ pass a driver’s license and criminal history check.
• Must be willing and medically able to participate in moderately strenuous physical exercise and pass a physical assessment.
• Must be willing to attend and complete a 22-week law enforcement accreditation program through Alexandria Technical College or Hennepin Technical College in order to be eligible to take the Peace Officer licensing examination. Program scheduled October 2024 – March 2025.
• Commitment to be hired as a Police Officer for the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe after completion of the training program and eligibility to be licensed as a peace officer.
• Any other special considerations such as:
• Must be insurable under the Mille Lacs Band Driver’s Insurance policy.
• Must pass an unblemished background check.
• Must pass a pre-employment drug & alcohol test.

• PPOE program consists of an academic learning environment combined with a physical skills training program. Candidates will be required to pass all these areas prior to the completion of the program. PPOE training will take place at Hennepin Technical College or Alexandria Technical College.

• Compensation will be $25 per hour, 40 hours per week (full-time), while attending the (full-time) PPOE training program. Candidates will need to maintain passing grades in order to maintain their position as Police Cadet.

• Disqualification criteria are outlined on the Minnesota POST Board’s website at mn.gov/post/, which outlines the minimum selection standards to become a peace officer.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Strong organization, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Preferred experience of working with Native American communities, preferably the Mille Lacs Band
• Exhibit a high level of personal integrity and ethical conduct.
• Strong desire to become a Peace Officer and be hired as an entry level Police Officer for the Mille Lacs Band Tribal Police Department.
• The ideal candidate's character will align with the Mille Lacs Tribal Police core values of respect, integrity, courage, and honor.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
• 40 hours paid per week while attending a full-time law enforcement accreditation program.
• Must be satisfactory passing all courses while in the PPOE program.
• During school breaks, must report to Mille Lacs Band Tribal Police for assignments to include, training, ride a long, and other reporting requirements deemed necessary by the Chief of Police.
• Local travel may be required
