SALARY RANGE: $19.50 - $25.99

SUMMARY:
The Intake and Referral Specialist is responsible to perform the duties related to intake and referral screening and keeping up to date documentation in the Family Services intake database. This individual is responsible for receiving calls concerning referral sources and to complete intakes that become cases for the Mille Lacs Band Family Service department, including the responsibility for creating and maintaining the appropriate documentation of reports to the Lead Investigator and Director.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Two-year degree in the Human Services field is required.
• One year of prior experience in referral source assessment- referrals and office management skills are preferred.
• Knowledge of or the ability to learn the Indian Child Welfare Act and the Minnesota Family Preservation Act.
• Knowledge and experience working with Native American communities, culture, customs, and cultural law.
• Willingness to learn and train in the interviewing, screening, and assessment process.
• Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
• Strong time management skills, task completion and reliability.
• In lieu of the education requirement for the two-year degree, special consideration to include a minimum of 6 years of experience in child welfare.
• Must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test.
• Must pass a background check.
• As a mandatory reporter, must understand the process and assessment parameters of mandatory reporting.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Decisions concerning whether to refer a walk-in or caller to the program or to the appropriate service.
• Decisions concerning which intakes require a mandated report with tribal or county police, County Human Services, etc.
• Decisions relevant to the practice and protection of client data privacy.
• Receive calls and “walk-ins” as intakes for child/family and elder/adult cases.
• Be readily available by phone and in person for people and agencies calling in to make abuse and neglect reports, referrals, or intakes, during and after hours.
• For intakes that require a mandated report, coordinate with Tribal or County Police and County Human Service Agencies to develop appropriate referrals that comply with State and Band Statutes.
• Complete and document enrollment status/family history for all open cases.
• Complete and document enrollment status requests for ICWA for county and out-of-state requests.
• Coordinate with counties, Office of the Solicitor General and the Child Protection team, regarding case assignments on county monitoring cases.
• Facilitate communication and act as a liaison between counties and MLB Family Services staff.
• Facilitate the opening and closing of cases.
• Acquire and maintain guardianship and closing court orders in Laserfiche Repository. Documents information received and initiate a case file including Medical Assistance (MA) numbers after assignment by supervising lead social worker or Director.
• Maintain data privacy and client confidentiality.
• Maintain all calls and referrals on the Family Services intake database.
• Maintain a log of all enrollment requests as directed.
• Maintain professional boundaries and relationships with clients and peers.
• Maintain other records, logs, etc. as required and provide to management.
• Ability to communicate clearly, frequently and with reliable information with Director of Family Services and Lead Investigator.
• Willing to prioritize work duties in congruence with the department priorities.
• Other duties as assigned.
• Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of people.
• Ability to establish relationships with the public, community members, and Family Services staff.
• The incumbent may represent the Mille Lacs Band at outside hearings, meetings, and other public events.
• Must be able to represent the Mille Lacs Band in a positive fashion.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
• Nature of work is such that the incumbent experiences infrequent periods of moderate stress levels while dealing with family members, public agencies, and others.
• Work is almost exclusively indoors in a controlled climate area. Moderate threat of personal danger or risk.
• Hours are typically 8-5, but possibly with some extra hours.
• Will involve working with many different people who are often distressed in some way.
• Local travel is minor; travel outside the state is very limited.
• Must be willing to be task oriented and complete assigned duties or tasks in a timely fashion.
• Work from home may be permissible with a signed telework agreement.
