Fisheries Internship/Seasonal Worker

JOB TYPE: Full Time

REPORTS TO: Fisheries Manager
SALARY RANGE: $15.00-$19.00

SUMMARY:
The Fisheries Intern position will assist existing fisheries staff with the upcoming FY 2022 Tribal Fish and Wildlife Grant project and work. More specifically, the fisheries intern will help electroshock/net fish, tag fish, assist with fish surgery’s, help retrieve fish listening devices (acoustic receivers), enter and download data, clean boats, and more. There will also be a laboratory component of the internship where the intern could clean tanks, monitor fish, and collect behavioral/scientific data.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Must have high school diploma or GED, or be in process of completing high school equivalent degree.
• No experience is necessary.
• Knowledge of trucks and boats preferred.
• Must have little to moderate verbal and writing skills.
• Must be able to perform moderate physical work, work in cold conditions, and occasionally work overnight/odd hours/weekends.
• Must have driver’s license. Must be insurable under the Mille Lacs Band Drivers Insurance policy.
• Must have a current valid driver’s license.
• Must have current driver’s license, reliable personal transportation, proof of current insurance coverage and insurability under the Band’s Auto Insurance Policy.
• Must pass a Pre-employment drug & alcohol test.
• Must pass a Background Check.
• During spring and fall must be flexible on hours.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Help retrieve acoustic receivers (fish listening devices) from concrete mooring structures in Mille Lacs Lake.
• Help electroshock fish for tracking studies and spring surveys.
• Clean boats and put away equipment.
• Enter GPS coordinates into GPS devices
• Assist with temperature/light logger retrieval.
• Assist with fish surgeries.
• Record data such as fish lengths, weights, and gender.
• Clean fish tanks and make sure they are healthy.
• Take water quality measurements.
• Observe and record data of laboratory fish at differing environmental settings.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
• Typical hours 8-5. May have some odd hours and weekends.
• Moderate stress
• Work is both in and out doors
• Little threat, risk or personal danger exposure
• Local travel is required
• Travel outside the state may be required occasionally.
