Ojibwe Immersion Teacher (2 positions)

SALARY RANGE: Ojibwe Language Teacher Salary Scale

SUMMARY:
The Ojibwe Immersion Teacher is a full time position, assigned to the Early Education and K-6 classroom in the entire Abinoojiyaag School/Wewinabi Early Education/Pine Grove School system. The Ojibwe Immersion Teacher is responsible to follow the lesson plan to meet Minnesota state standards for Grade level assigned to, including Mille Lacs Band language and culture standards. The Ojibwe Immersion Teacher is responsible to implement language and culture into the core curriculum of the school and classroom.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum:

  1. Loves young people, can whole-heartedly engage in working with and for them.
  2. Licensed teacher, Eminence Credentials or Bachelor Degree and meets the 1 – 4 Tier Minnesota Teacher Licensing requirements. Must receive teaching licensure in 4 years or less or Minnesota Eminence Credentials.
  3. Willingness to maintain a high level of competence, exercise discreet judgment, and honor confidentiality.
  4. Compliance with Mille Lacs Band drug and alcohol policy.
  5. Compliance with federal background check.
    Desirable:
  6. Projects an image of service and professionalism with a positive attitude.
  7. Experience in speaking Ojibwemowin and teaching in a classroom setting.
  8. Interacts easily as an integral leader and member of the faculty and staff.
  9. Understanding of the relationship of Nay Ah Shing School to the Mille Lacs community, values and supports the mission of all.
  10. Experience, familiarity and the ability to work with the diverse constituencies of Nay Ah Shing School.
  11. Licensed in CPR and First Aid.
    • Must have current valid driver’s license, reliable personal transportation, proof of current insurance coverage, and insurability under the Band’s Auto Insurance Policy.
    • Must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test.
    • Must pass a background check.
    • Background investigation required that shows no theft or fraud above a misdemeanor, no felony drug conviction and no sexual or crimes-against-a-person conviction at any level.
    • A staff person with direct contact with or access to children in care must disclose the arrest, conviction, and applicant background information if that staff person:
    (a) has a conviction of, has admitted to, has an adjudication of delinquency for, has been charged and is awaiting trial for, or a preponderance of the evidence indicates the person has committed:
  1. a crime against a child;
  2. an act of physical or sexual abuse;
  3. neglect;
  4. a felony;
  5. the same or similar crimes as those in this subsection listed in the laws of another state or of the United States or of any Tribal law;
    (b) has a conviction of, has admitted to, has an adjudication of delinquency for, has been charged and is awaiting trial for, or a preponderance of the evidence indicates the person has committed any misdemeanor offense under Federal, State, or Tribal law involving crimes of violence; sexual assault, molestation, exploitation, contact or prostitution; crimes against persons; or offenses committed against children. The Licensing Committee may evaluate the nature and time of a misdemeanor assault charge as well as other types of misdemeanor crimes not specified in this section to determine whether employment is appropriate.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
CURRICULUM

  1. Plans, organizes, and implements a variety of learning experiences to meet stated curriculum objectives and language and culture standards set by Nay Ah Shing School.
  2. Knows and understands grade level curriculum content and assists when necessary in design or revision of that curriculum.
  3. Knows, understands and uses technology, as appropriate.
  4. Organizes and implements a variety of learning experiences to meet class lesson plans that aligned with the school’s curriculum for specific grade.
  5. Develop relationships with Community elders and Mille lacs Band Representatives.
  6. Knowledgeable or willing to learn about Mille Lacs Ojibwe Culture and Traditions.
    STUDENTS
  7. Provides interdisciplinary individual and group experiences for students.
  8. Works in direct contact with students.
  9. Fosters in students an appreciation of Ojibwemowin and cultural practices to create a positive learning attitude toward all curriculum areas.
  10. Helps students become aware of how each subject area surrounds them and enhances their life.
  11. Creates a healthy, safe, welcoming and comfortable learning environment that supports student growth and development.
  12. Works with students to help them learn and monitors the progress of each student against pre-determined requirements.
  13. Keeps records pertaining to student growth. Prepares student progress reports for interpretation of learning to parents and students.
  14. Completes on-going student assessments and presents at parent conferences.
  15. Observes students regularly and makes modifications in individualized plans to ensure success for all students.
  16. Identifies special needs of students and seeks assistance of specialists to help meet those needs.
  17. Promotes and maintains appropriate behavior in classroom.
  18. Enters student attendance daily into NASIS.
  19. Enters student grades and test score into NASIS.
    PARENTS
  20. Develops a positive relationship with parents by establishing and maintaining open communication.
  21. Participates in planning and attends parent activity nights, and other planned school sponsored cultural events.
    OTHER
  22. Understands and honors student and family confidentiality.
  23. Maintains student educational, health and safety records in accordance with current laws, regulations and grants.
  24. Maintains the documentation and reporting requirements of the school.
  25. Monitors student common areas during school hours, as per regular teacher’s schedule.

  28. Direct supervisor of assistant teachers and aides.
  29. Maintains and improves professional competence by participating in faculty meetings, team meetings as a member and facilitator, in-service training, staff committees and other appropriate professional activities.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
• Nature of work is such those incumbent experiences regular periods of moderate to high stress levels. Primary sources of stress deals with student issues and workload.
• Work environment will vary depending on programming.
• Moderate threat of personal danger or risk.
• Hours 8-4pm with some evening scheduled school events.
• Local travel is required, limited travel outside the state is also required.
