Spiritual/Cultural Advisor

SUMMARY:
The Spiritual/Cultural Advisor is responsible for developing, coordinating, managing and providing spiritual/cultural services to clients of the Four Winds program.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Must be recognized as a cultural and spiritual expert within the community.
• Must have experience working as a cultural/spiritual provider in Native American communities.
• Must have proven cultural protocol and knowledge as it relates to Native American communities.
• A deep understanding and personal experience in the cultural and spiritual traditions of Native American communities in Minnesota.
• Must have knowledge of the resources available inside and outside the Band that can be used in the treatment of alcoholics and other drug users.
• Must have a least five (5) years of experience in counseling, chemical dependency, social work, psychology or similar field.
• Must have a minimum of two (2) to five (5) years of experience in addiction treatment, counseling, and/or assessment.
• Familiar with and sensitivity to culture and tradition of the Mille Lacs Band.
• Commitment to Native American cultural programming.
• Understanding of non-traditional treatment modalities.
• Considerable knowledge of the disease concept and addictions.
• Familiarity with the philosophy of Alcoholics Anonymous.
• Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and Band rules, regulations, and policies.
• Ability to maintain highest level of confidentiality with respect to clients to maintain integrity of program.
• Ability to communicate effectively with others.
• Ability to write effectively.
• Basic computer skills, including Windows and Word.
Many chemically dependent people relate better to a counselor that is in recovery and can act as a role model in successful recovery of an addiction. Therefore, while not mandatory that the incumbent be in recovery; consideration will be given to incumbent’s personal history. If in recovery, a minimum of 2 years of sobriety is required at time of hire and must be able to pass a background check.
• Must have a current valid driver’s license.
• Must be insurable under the Mille Lacs Band Drivers Insurance policy.
• Must pass a background check.
• Must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Provide chemical dependency counseling, treatment, and aftercare planning utilizing a variety of modalities for individuals, families and groups.
• Coordinate cultural and spiritual programs for the outpatient CD treatment programs.
• Participate in the multi-disciplinary
• Participate in and/or facilitate treatment groups and educational groups on culture and spiritual aspects of recovery from addiction. Recruit Band Elders and volunteers to serve in mentoring roles for treatment programs.
• Network with other tribal and county human services organizations.
• Maintain appropriate records of treatment and referrals for clients.
• Complete life skills and psycho-social assessments for clients.
• Meet with clients, both individually and in groups, and with their families to provide spiritual/cultural counseling, support and education.
• Assist clients as necessary and appropriate while in treatment and recovery.
• Provide liaison between CD staff and other HHS professionals.
• Participate in discharge planning for clients.
• Maintain confidentiality of all program participants per United States Code (42 U.S.C. and 290 dd-2).

WORKING CONDITIONS:
• Nature of work is such that incumbent experiences infrequent periods of moderate to high stress levels while dealing with clients, family members, and others.
• Work is almost exclusively indoors in a controlled climate area.
• Little threat of personal danger or risk, although working with certain patients may subject incumbent to periods of moderate to high stress levels.
• Hours are typically 8-5, but may also need to work a 1-9 p.m. schedule. Extra hours and weekend work may also be required. May also require occasional "on call' availability to cover emergency situations.
• Will involve working with many different people who are often distressed in some way.
Local travel is required; travel outside the state is very limited.
