SUD Counselor - Men's Halfway House

SALARY RANGE: $28.61-$38.70

SUMMARY:
The SUD Counselor is responsible for providing chemical abuse counseling for the recovery of alcoholics and other chemically abusive persons.  
QUALIFICATIONS:
•   Bachelor’s degree in counseling, SUD, social work, psychology or similar field is required.
•   Current LADC licensure or UMICAD Counselor Certification is required.
•   Minimum of two (2) to five (5) years of experience in SUD treatment, counseling, and/or assessment.
•   Considerable knowledge of the disease concept and addictions.
•   Familiarity with the philosophy of White Bison Wellbriety and Alcoholics Anonymous.
•   Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and Band rules, regulations, and policies.
•   Knowledge of the resources available inside and outside the Band that can be used in the treatment of alcoholics and other drug users.
•   Understanding of non-traditional treatment modalities.
•   Familiarity with and sensitivity to culture and tradition of the Mille Lacs Band.
•   Commitment to multi-cultural programming.
•   Ability to maintain highest level of confidentiality with respect to clients to maintain integrity of program.
•   Ability to communicate effectively with others.
•   Ability to write effectively.
•   Basic computer skills, including Windows and Word.
•   Many chemically abusive people relate better to a counselor that is in recovery and can act as a role model in successful recovery of an addiction.  Therefore, while not mandatory that the incumbent be in recovery; consideration will be given to incumbent personal history.  If in recovery, a minimum of 2 years of documented sobriety is required at time of hire and must be able to pass a background check.
•   Must have current driver’s license, reliable personal transportation, have proof of current insurance coverage.  Must also be insurable under the Band’s Auto Insurance Policy.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
•   Provide SUD counseling, treatment, and aftercare planning utilizing a variety of modalities for individuals, families and groups.
•   Coordinate educational programs for the SUD outpatient CD treatment program.
•   Facilitate adult groups.
•   Recruit Band Elders to serve in mentor role for those in outpatient treatment programs.
•   Network with other tribal and county human services organizations.
•   Transport clients as necessary.
•   Maintain appropriate records of treatment and referrals for clients.
•   Complete comprehensive assessments for clients.
•   Conduct SUD program orientation sessions.
•   Meet with clients, both individually and in groups, and with their families to provide family counseling and education.
•   Assist clients as necessary and appropriate while in treatment and recovery.
•   Provide liaison between CD SUD staff and other HHS professionals.
•   Participate in discharge planning for clients.
•   Maintain confidentiality of all program participants per United States Code (42 CFR Part 2).
WORKING CONDITIONS:
•   Nature of work is such that incumbent experiences infrequent periods of moderate to high stress levels while dealing with clients, family members, and others.
•   Work is almost exclusively in doors in a controlled climate area.
•   Little threat of personal danger or risk, although working with certain patients may subject incumbent to periods of moderate to high stress levels.
•   Hours are typically 8-5, but may also need to work a 1-9 p.m. schedule.  Extra hours and weekend work may also be required.  May also require occasional "on call' availability to cover emergency situations.
•   Will involve working with many different people who are often distressed in some way.
•   Local travel is required, travel outside the state is very limited.
